Coppermine House

Creating a warm modernist sanctuary

The design intent was to renovate an existing Mid-Century Modern house into a residence that feels calm and connected to its wooded site while preserving rigorous modernist clarity. The central tension was to develop a cohesive material language that could flow from public living spaces to private areas without relying on applied ornamentation or traditional trim details.

Vertical wood slat screens as a continuous architectural motif

The vertical wood slat screens form the defining architectural motif. Running continuously from floor to ceiling, the evenly spaced slats function as spatial dividers, light filters, and visual connectors between levels. Each slat was fabricated and aligned to maintain consistent spacing across long vertical spans while integrating with the matte black handrail and terrazzo staircase.

Cohesion Across the Home

The millwork scope extended to a fully custom walk-in closet and mudroom with integrated pull-out storage, deep wood-lined window seats that double as seating, symmetrical entry doors with matching slat sidelights, and ceiling planes that continue the material language. Every element was fabricated to the same standards of fit and finish so the interior reads as a single, considered system.

Materials & Precision

A restrained palette of light-toned wood veneer with consistent cathedral grain, honed terrazzo flooring, and matte black metal accents was maintained throughout. All components were fabricated to ±1 mm tolerances using CNC routing paired with hand finishing. This precision enabled trimless transitions between wood, drywall, and stone surfaces while maintaining continuous grain flow across large vertical elements.

Engineering the Window Seat

The deep wood-lined window seat illustrates the approach to material integration. The wood surround wraps continuously along the sill and jambs with flush, trimless transitions to the adjacent white walls. The construction turns a standard window opening into a functional seating element while preserving maximum natural light and views to the exterior.
